EU And China Textile Quotas To End
**************************************

The European Union (EU) and China have agree to end quota restrictions on Chinese textile imports in 2008 - and replace it with a joint surveillance system to monitor trade flow, the European Commission announced recently. Although imports of these goods will be closely monitored, their level of import will not be restricted by this arrangement. According to the Commission, the joint surveillance system will cover eight categories of textiles and clothing from China - T-shirts, pullovers, men's trousers, blouses, dresses, bras, bed linen and flax yarn.

Following a so-called 'textile war' the EU and China reached an agreement in June 2005 on resuming quotas to cover China's textile exports to the EU. This expires at the end of 2007 when the new arrangement will start.

Egypt To Become Developed Country By 2020
***************************************
Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Nazef recently announced that Egypt plans to become one of the world's developed nations within 12 years. In an interview with Egyptian Radio, Nazef said current economic indicators suggest developed nation status is perfectly possible by 2020. According to a government report, Egyptian economic growth has risen to 7.1% over the last financial year and gross domestic product has reached E£731 billion (US$130 billion). Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has grown to US$11 billion, up from US$2 billion in 2005.

US - Costa Rica Free Trade Agreement Voted In
*****************************************
Costa Rican President Oscar Arias recently announced that voters have approved the proposed free trade agreement (FTA) with the United States in a referendum. 'The people of Costa Rica have said yes to the free trade agreement, and that for me is a sacred wish' Arias said in a televised address to the nation after initial results showed voters were in favour of the FTA. Results later released by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal showed that with 89.8 % of votes counted some 51.7% of voters voted for the FTA. The Costa Rica government actually signed the agreement in 2004, but the country decided to hold a referendum because of political controversy over the issue.

Like many Latin American countries, good trade sites in English are difficult to find. However, the US Embassy in Costa Rica has a good site, with lots of useful information and trading links: sanjose.usembassy.gov

Now Easier To Do Business In Africa
********************************

Doing business has become easier in some parts of Africa, the World Bank's annual 'Doing Business' survey reported recently.

In 2006/2007, 24 African countries implemented 49 major economic reforms. However, in the regional rankings on the pace of reform, Africa fell from third place to fifth - surpassed by South Asia, the Middle East and North Africa. Ghana and Kenya both rank among the top 10 reformers worldwide this year, and made the most substantial progress in the ease of doing business rankings. Mauritius, with six reforms, tops the rankings in Africa on the ease of doing business and reaches 27th in the global rankings. Burkina Faso and Mozambique both continue to become more business-friendly. The report also found that countries where there are more women in business are generally easier to do business with.

China : Small Volume Trading Opportunities
***************************************
Trading with China often involves trading in massive quantities, putting the opportunities out of reach of some small importers and exporters. However, we've found a couple of websites where you can buy from China in small quantities - and order easily over the Internet too. Global Sources Direct at www.globalsourcesdirect.com is a portal that enables companies of all sizes to buy products from original manufacturers in China, at low factory prices.  Deals include audio, car accessories, electronics, pet products, hardware, health and beauty and many more. At another site, www.smallvolume.com, you can import small quantities of wholesale lines direct from China and do everything online. Some very low prices  too! (As ever, it's sensible to proceed with caution when dealing with new e-commerce businesses in places like China.)

Trade With Thailand
******************

While China dominates the import-export industry it's easy to forget that several other Asian countries are big trading nations too - and Thailand certainly shouldn't be overlooked. Thai manufacturers produce a wide range of low-cost goods and - while their factory gate prices aren't quite as low as China - they tend to be more quality orientated. Many exporters here speak good English too. If you're interested in the opportunities take a look at exporter.thaitrade.com. Thaitrade is the official Thai government trade site with lots of export contacts.

Why Not Trade Tyres ?
********************

If you're looking for a new product to trade then why not think about importing or exporting tyres? Billions of tyres are bought annually, in almost every country worldwide - not just for cars but for motor and pedal cycles, buses, trucks, heavy plant and aircraft too. Tyres are a product which regularly need to be replaced, leading to regular repeat orders, and the market is growing fast - especially in the booming Asian markets.

If you are interested in knowing more about the tyre industry here's a handy (US-based, hence the spelling 'Tire') industry contact: Tire Review Online at www.tirereview.com.
