Dubai Now World’s Third Largest Re-Export Hub
**********************************************************
Dubai has become the third largest re-export hub in the world after Hong Kong and Singapore – according to a recent report in ‘Gulf News’. The boom in re-exports is mainly due to a surge in Chinese trade. Average annual growth rate of imports from China was 14% from 1997 to 2005, while China’s trade with the UAE grew 31.5% in 2006 to US$14.2 billion the report, quoting a Global Sources study, said.

Trade through Dubai represents 80% of the UAE’s Dh858.65 billion foreign trade recorded last year, which is about 143.34% of the country’s Dh599 billion GDP. Buyers in the Middle East need to meet growing consumer demand for quality products – and are turning more and more to quality Chinese suppliers to meet this demand. The Chinese government plans to double Middle East trade from US$51.3 billion to US$100 billion by 2010.

West Bengal Looking For Export Markets For Handicrafts
********************************************************************
The West Bengal, India, government is commissioning studies to find out if handicrafts from the state will have a market in the USA, Britain and Germany. Several Bengal artisans are also to take part in international exhibitions in Belgium, France and Spain after their successful exhibitions recently in Milan and Barcelona. G.D. Gautama, Principal Secretary of the State Cottage and Small Scale Industries Ministry (http://ssi.nic.in/ – note no www) says ‘To meet the increasing demand of Bengali handicrafts in Europe, the government has submitted three proposals to the Textile Ministry to conduct market studies in the US, Britain and Germany.’

The India government has allocated around 1 million rupees for market studies in the USA and Britain. It is planning to promote several traditional products such as terracotta pottery, Baluchari saris, dokra metal handicrafts and bamboo items in foreign markets.

Weak Franc Spells Good News For Swiss Exports
*************************************************************
Switzerland is usually thought of as a high-cost economy, and so not a great place to source exports. But Switzerland’s economy should continue to benefit from a weak franc this year and strong growth in the euro zone - according to a leading economic research institute. The KOF Swiss Economic Institute in Zurich said recently that the export sector should grow this year, albeit slowly. It said that although there is a ‘downward trend’ for traditionally strong services like construction and banking prospects were brighter for the strength of exports to the European Union.

Germany is Switzerland’s single most important export market, and Swiss goods remain attractive as the franc is at an eight year low against the euro.

India Can Be Very Chilli!  Booming Trade In Spices
***********************************************************
During April 2007 India exported 38,972 tonnes of spices and earned US$78.99 million in foreign exchange from them. This was a volume increase of 44% compared to April last year – and a 61% per cent growth in income.

Chilli (22,000 tonnes) contributed the highest in earnings at 38%, followed by spice oils and oleoresins at 36% and pepper at 6%. Compared to April 2006, export of pepper, cardamom, chilli, coriander, fennel, fenugreek and other seed spices such as aniseed, mustard, nutmeg, mint products, spice oils and other spices such as tamarind and asafoetida were higher in both quantity and value, a recent report says.

If you’re interested in sourcing spices the Spices Board of India has a great site with information and supplier contacts : http://www.indianspices.com.

Sudan Bright New Export Performer
*******************************************
Since Sudan became a significant oil exporter its economy has picked up and is now growing steadily. Sudan began liberalising its economy in 1992 and the number of industrial firms has jumped from only 6,700 in the 1980s to more than 24,000 now. Its national economy has grown from -2% before 1989 to 7% last year. The capital Khartoum is one of the largest cities in northern Africa.

In terms of trading potential Sudan is now regarded as the second best economy in Africa and third in the Arab world – a major achievement for a country of 35 million people which was once isolated and ignored by foreign investors. Sudan began exporting oil about eight years ago and has 900 million barrels of proven reserves. There is also great potential for investment in the mineral sector as Sudan is rich with mineral resources, largely untapped. These include gold, iron, silver, copper, uranium, chrome, zinc, gypsum and mica.

You can find Sudan’s Ministry of Industry website at http://www.industry.gov.sd – while Sudan Trade Point at www.tpsudan.org is a fairly small but promising-looking trade portal.

Find Trade Leads Throughout Europe With Europages
****************************************************************
Europages is a B2B (business to business) directory designed to ‘facilitate trade within Europe’. It contains listings from 700,000 of Europe’s 25 million (estimated) businesses which are divided into 21 business activities, 700 main headings and 3,500 specialised headings. Businesses listed in Europages are classified according to a unique nomenclature which is much more accurate than the industrial nomenclatures used by many other directories. For each business, Europages provides you with the address, telephone number, fax and e-mail (if available). The database is fully checked once a year by phone and updated in real time. New countries are being added each year.
